Hope, Desperation, Relief
Wed 10 November 2021 Tags human natureAs I sit here on the chair in the care home, I have done my morning routine of a wash, dress up etc. and I am placed in a chair. Anticipating my breakfast and a strong caffeinated brew, I am eventually served with a cheese omelette and a hot mug of coffee. Wonderful!
Mugs/Cups are more than likely to have all sorts messages or statements printed on them. We are all familiar with the usual "Best Dad!", "Love you Mom!", "Merry Christmas!" etc. mugs. Today I had a mug that said, 'Welcome to a brand new day full of hope and possibilities', and this got me thinking. There are so many facets, that symbolise what this mug means to different people. Somebody surely brought this in for a loved one who is a resident at the care home. A former patient who suffered from God knows what. Having woken up from a comma myself, I understand that while I was under it would've been nerve wrecking for my family. So when I woke up, it would've been normal to receive a mug of that sort. A token to hjkbolise the relief my family felt that I woke up.
For other people, who have different conditions, it may symbolise hope. Hope of getting better and improving but hope nonetheless. Hope of coming back home. Hope of returning to their loved ones. Hope that equally applies to the family but also to the patient. Hope that the family and friends have to convey to the patient and to encourage them.
To the patient, this also symbolises desperation and uncertainty. Having such logos, I believe, conveys to the person of what their family and friends feel. Without actually knowing what is going to happen, they want to enforce positivity upon their loved one. They want to encourage them and give them emotional strength. However, the patient probably understands that a helping hand from the people they love has been reduced to some printed letters on a piece of crockery.
